Our Failures and Frustrations
Running a small non-profit is like running a small business in many ways. Products, services, adding value, costs, rent, payroll, bottom line, failures, frustrations etc. are present in both type of organizations. What is different is that small business owners are most always trying to increase profits and personal gain; we call it capitalism and although it works, it doesn't provide for all segments of society. Many successfull business owners have made a lot of money and have earned it with personal sacrifice, risk taking, and decades of hard work.
Small non-profits directors are generally trying to increase other kinds of good they provide for free to their community through partnering with Donors who believe in their causes. These directors seldom make a lot of money even though they also have personally sacrificed, took risks and worked hard for decades.
Many small businesses and small non-profits startups fail. Even successful ones experience many small failures and frustrations.
NYEP has grown and survived since 2007 and has learned from small failures and worked through frustrations shared with you below: 1. Our most frustrating failures have been with NYEP Girl Interns not completing our 2-year Program. We have only about 50% of our interns who graduate in spite of our best efforts. We try to stay positive and focus on the success stories which there have been many. Even our dropouts come back with praise and explanations as to how their lives were improved by their NYEP days. Some problems cannot be adequately solved; some people refuse to be helped. Grrrrr. 2. Many of our NYEP Girls are sexuallly active and a few have gotten pregnant. We take that as a personal failure but deal with realities the best we can. One such pregnancy became an amazing and wonderfull story and experience. Click Here. 3. 4. |
